What to do when walking on eggshells in a relationship you want to work...?

I was in almost the exact situation. We're not together anymore. I miss him and still think of him often, but we needed time to grow apart from each other. I'm glad I am not with him now, whatever the future may hold. It was my realization that love alone isn't enough, however rare it appears to be.
